Instructor Wendee Holtcamp
Online Nature Writing Course and Advanced Writing Workshop

| Writing Course | Advanced Writing Workshop |

We're on the high seas hunting for a needle floating in the vast Pacific. The needle is stuck through a blue Styrofoam bobber that's being dragged behind a leatherback hatchling via a 3-foot string. Even though we've got the means to find it -- a radio transmitter -- no one said this would be easy.

- Wendee Holtcamp in "Love & Death on Turtle Beach" a 3-week Costa Rica Expedition for Discovery Channel Online covering leatherback turtle research.

I've been at this for over ten years, and I love nothing more than going on adventures with scientists around the world and writing about it for magazines. What job offers more fun?

If you'd like to write for more nature, conservation, and outdoor markets, this online course is for you. If you enjoy nature and journaling and are considering a career in writing, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn how easy it is to publish with the right guidance and careful instruction.

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees... - John Muir

Sierra Club founder John Muir wasn't the first to be inspired by nature enough to write about it, but his prose provided a cornerstone for the increasingly popular genre we know today as nature writing. Besides selling to more than 35 print magazines dedicated exclusively to nature and the outdoors, you can increasingly market such stories to general interest, travel, science, regional, inflight, outdoor sports, children's, and health/lifestyle publications, as well as the dot-com niche.

Who: Aspiring and professional writers alike will benefit. Some writers prefer to just receive the weekly resources, while others prefer to actively participate. Students are welcome to participate as little or as much as they want.

What: Course assignments guide you through performing an in-depth analysis of your dream market, developing a carefully crafted query, writing a short article, and sending it in to your target market. Learn how to use the techniques of observation, journaling, and topic-spoking to improve your writing and land more assignments.

Why: This course is jam-packed with useful information. You will get:

  • Constructive feedback on your queries and writing
  • Q&A interviews with environment/nature magazine editors including
    • E the Environmental Magazine
    • Sierra Magazine
    • OnEarth Magazine
    • Orion Magazine
    • National Wildlife Magazine
    • National Geographic and NG Adventure
  • Weekly handouts with lists and reviews of resources
  • An attentive instructor that tailors the course to student interests

This course was offered several times through the Freelance Success Institute and is now offered through Holtcamp's business, LOGOS Communications, LLC, of which she is sole proprietor. Holtcamp also authored course materials for the Australian College of Journalism's "Writing about Nature and the Outdoors" course and was profiled in the 2001 Writer's Market as the Nature/Outdoor Writer.

ADVANCED Writing Workshop

When: Summer dates to be announced soon.

A 6-week program designed for students who have taken my previous course, this workshop will help you identify your long- and short-term career goals, uncover creative blocks, and develop steps to achieve your writing goals. This course will focus on what you need to focus on, but each student will develop two completed writing projects with ample feedback that will allow you to build on your strengths. You will use the tools gained from the previous course to identify a story idea, a target market, and write two pieces - ready for submission - after one or more revisions. These writing projects - whether queries or essays or news briefs - will preferably be submitted during the course to the publication of your choosing. The course costs includes two phone mentoring sessions with the instructor, Wendee Holtcamp.

Students who have not taken my other online writing course can still sign up, albeit at a higher rate because you will be receiving all the course materials from the basic course as well.

First-time registrants - $350
Returning students - $250

-- Diane Williamson

"On the plane trips I found myself thinking about how much I learned about writing for magazine publication. I admire you so much! You've been a generous and talented teacher, and I think my life was enriched with this class."
-- LeeAnn Kryder

"I sold my first nature article!!! I sold my "Protecting the Humboldt penguins in Peru" story to Wildlife Journal, a two-year-old quarterly magazine. I have been very persistent, as you urged us in class."
- Pat Terry
